Crocus Hill St. Paul En Suite

The En Suite was created within two bedrooms of this Crocus Hill four square home. Sylvestre Remodeling and Design was the contractor for the en suite, and they creatively resolved issues such as an uneven floor structure, not easily accessible plumbing and installing duct work for the new air conditioning system. This remodel features a bright 3/4 bath with marble counters, two spacious closets, one a walk-in, and new double hung windows flanking the bed.

Vintage Green Bathroom

This spectacular bathroom in a traditional 1930's four square home is the product of the collaboration of a very thoughtful client, a superb tile contractor, myself and the Production Department at Sylvestre Remodeling and Design, who built the project. It was enlarged from the previous second floor bathroom by cantilevering it out the back of the house 2 1/2'. Features include Ceramic wall tile from Mission Tile West in California, floor tile from Subway Ceramics, a large walk-in shower with plenty of natural light, a toilet imported from Italy with an in-wall tank to create more floor space, vintage light fixtures and switches and many other custom details.

Minnetonka Rambler Whole House

The client had a plan for a large addition to this small, single-story home, which we abandoned in favor of reconfiguring and opening up the entire interior along with a 2’ bump-out in the kitchen. Then we added a screen porch and a large deck.

Highland Park Dining, Kitchen, Library Addition

This kitchen, dining, and library addition was the first of four remodels to this original small farmhouse in the Highland area of Saint Paul. The need was to support a growing family and create an open family space.

Ramsey Hill Whole House

This award winning victorian home was in need of much love. The exterior was eroding, the windows were all original and the home's envelope leaked like no other.

Along with some obvious physical needs, the home also lacked the beauty and elegance it once had for the Summit Ave neighborhood in St. Paul. The rooms were small, dark and dysfunctional along with other historic elements that were eroding due to improper care.

We took on this whole house remodel head first, salvaging the entire footprint and original old flooring. We also installed a geothermal heating/cooling system, recycled the old millwork, installed Marvin low EII windows, installed water efficient appliances along with other energy-saving lighting techniques, while harnessing Southern lighting.

Bella can argue that her favorite spot is the new sunny and restored front porch and newly finished sunroom above. Here she can watch year round the cars go by while collect daily pets from passerbys.

St. Paul Deck and Egress

This steel frame egress stair and deck structure replaced a decaying 100-year old wood structure. The new design includes a second exit and exterior deck for each condominium unit.

Master Retreat

This is one of five bathrooms we remodeled to accommodate the changing needs of the client’s family. The project consisted of a major upgrade to an existing large bath with hot tub (removed), a new large walk-in closet and laundry.

Main Level Craftsman and Motawi Tiles

We replaced an outdated, deteriorated kitchen with this new beautiful craftsman kitchen featuring a Motawi tile pattern backsplash.

Lake Nokomis Kitchen Addition

We designed this kitchen and family room addition as a high, energy-efficient exterior wall system, eliminating the infiltration of air and moisture. This construction keeps the dew point outside of the house, allowing the interior wall to remain dry and warm.

Also incorporated is hot water in-floor heat on each level, a refreshed kitchen, no/low VOC finishes, fsc certified lumber, and a heat recovery ventilator.

Lilydale Condominium

We removed the entire interior of this one-bedroom, one-bath condo; replaced all of the picture windows with a view of the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers with new H-windows; replaced the heating and cooling systems; and created a bright, modern and open interior which reflects the curved geometry of the building.

Golden Valley Kitchen and Family Room

As the second phase of a major remodel to this split-level home (which had included the bright, sunny family room), we replicated an older, worn Scandinavian-style kitchen with this new, somewhat modified version.

Sunny Attic and Bathroom

Like so many of our second floor attic remodels, this space was given new life and light by taking advantage of the opportunities presented by the existing attic configuration.

St. Louis Park 2nd Floor Addition

We designed and built a new second floor addition on an original small Cape Cod in a neighborhood of other similar one-story houses. The intention was to achieve the scale of a story-and-a-half home to not feel as an outsized home by contrast. We accommodated a high ceiling painting studio, two bedrooms, a small work area, and a luxurious bath.

White Bear Country Kitchen

This cozy country kitchen in a White Bear Lake home is one of our more recent remodels. Both homeowners say "they love it" and one family member says “it's like pulling a sharp stick out of your eye.” It's a good fit and a surprising vignette within this suburban 1970's split-level home.

Como Park Craftsman

This American Foursquare home had a kitchen that was tired and outdated in this otherwise beautifully wood-trimmed and detailed home. It was not only falling apart, but it was dysfunctional and clashed with the homes era.

We fully gutted the kitchen, re-insulated the walls with foam, installed light-filled passageways to an existing deck and created beautiful mission style cabinets topped with soapstone counters.

The new space works superbly for a family of four, with a pass through from the dining room using reclaimed wood to match the rift and quartered oak trim from the dining room.

Plymouth Main Level

This remodel consisted of two projects, separated by ten years, the first being the den and dining room renovation, and the most recent-a kitchen, family room, front entry, mudroom and laundry addition (within the garage).

The design motif is a combination of maple and cherry woods, in trying to aesthetically improve upon the typical home builder look that the homeowners were wanting to move away from. A design centered more around the needs of their growing family has been achieved.

Children's Bathroom Suite

This was a double bathroom remodel for our client’s daughter and son which took two not-so-functional bathrooms and remodeled them into two separate, personalized and much more useful rooms. Their son’s bathroom now has a walk-in shower and personal vanity, while the girl's room is flooded with a happy pink and elegant marble.

Sunny Bathing

Minnehaha Parkway Bath

Like so many Minneapolis second floor bathrooms, this one’s time had come to be remodeled. By simply updating the fixtures, adding an oak craftsman vanity and medicine cabinet with an updated tile pattern, we created an old look with a contemporary touch.

A Solar Garage Amongst Cherry Blossoms

We replaced an old garage in poor condition with a large, solar-powered, two-story structure, creating additional space for canoe storage and repair. Electricity from the photo-voltaic panels is recycled to the utility company when the system is over-producing.

St. Louis Park Kitchen and Dinette Bump Out

Working with a small and outdated kitchen and dinette area, we bumped out two feet in the dinette, and install new cherry cabinets. granite counters, new fixtures and finishes, and an oak floor. We re-insulated walls, ceilings, and the crawl space for comfort and energy savings.

Sustainable Green Projects

The major focus of Harvey Sherman’s work, since he started 23 years ago, has been sustainable and green design and construction. Sherman has designed and built many projects incorporating green features, one of which achieved Gold Minnesota GreenStar Certification. Together with other architects, builders, and sustainability professionals, Harvey Sherman helped create the Minnesota GreenStar Program which provided a checklist for green homes and remodels.

The New American House

Along with Troy West and Jacqueline Leavitt, winners of the widely heralded “A New American House Architectural Design Competition 1984,” we created this twelve unit community-oriented cluster of 1,000 square foot houses designed to be used in two parts for working at home or as a home with an auxiliary apartment for smaller non-traditional families. It is based on the winning design from the architectural competition. It remains un-built.
